Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
